Will Your Commute be Impacted by Metro’s Station Closures?

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) recently announced this summer’s scheduled construction projects. The four-phase system maintenance and modernization project will impact commuters who rely on the Orange or Green Lines, with minimal impact on the Silver Line.

Free shuttle service will be offered to connect commuters with the Metro. These shuttles may be Metrobus, leased shuttle, or coach buses. We will provide information as the project approaches.

Below, we’ve outlined each of the four projects, and the assistance offered to reduce the impact on your commute.

Orange Line: Cheverly-Minnesota Ave – May 12-21

The east end of the Orange Line from Cheverly Metro Station to the Minnesota Ave Metro Station will be single tracking from May 12 – 21. No station closures will occur due to this project, but train frequency will be impacted. Rail service will operate on the following schedule during weekday rush hour:

  • Orange Line trains every 12 minutes between Vienna and Stadium-Armory
  • Orange Line trains every 24 minutes between Stadium-Armory and New Carrollton
  • Orange Line+ trains every 24 minutes between Stadium-Armory and Downtown Largo
  • Non-Weekday Rush: Orange Line trains every 20 minutes between Vienna and New Carrollton

Orange Line: Vienna-Ballston-MU – June 3-25

WMATA is replacing the original rail between Ballston-MU Metro Station and Vienna Metro Station to ensure safety and improve reliability. Vienna, Dunn Loring, West Falls Church, and East Falls Church Metro Stations will close until June 25 while the rail is replaced.

Orange Line riders will need to ride a shuttle to Ballston-MU Metro Station to access the Metro. Silver Line riders must transfer to a shuttle at McLean Metro Station and ride to Ballston-MU to access stations toward Washington, DC.

To limit the impact on your commute, four free shuttles will be available during the closures:

Orange Line Shuttle: Local service between Vienna, Dunn Loring, West Falls Church, East Falls Church, and Ballston-MU stations during regular Metrorail operating hours.

  • Every 5 minutes during rush hours (6-9 AM, 3-7 PM)
  • Every 10 minutes all other times

Orange Line: Vienna-West Falls Church – June 26-July 16
